Casamance | Takumi

Takumi is a hand-made wallcovering from Casamance's Midori collection: a loose lay-out of woven abaca and jute fibres set onto a metallic Japanese paper, on a non-woven backing. The name means master artisan, and it is the hand that shows. The strands sit at slightly different angles and densities, with the metallised paper glinting through the gaps, so the wall reads as a raw natural texture with a low sheen beneath it.

The composition is 50 per cent paper, 45 per cent abaca and 5 per cent jute, 440 grams per square metre, at a 91 centimetre usable width. Made in the Philippines, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of C-s1, d0 and Class A to ASTM E84. There are 4 colourways: Cuivre Naturel, Or Naturel, Ivoire Naturel and Noir Naturel. Ivoire Naturel is the gentlest and easiest to place; Noir Naturel suits a small room where the fibres can be lit from the side.

We would use Takumi on the wall behind a bed or a sofa, where the texture can be read at close range, or lining the back of a deep alcove so the metallic paper flickers behind the objects. It sits comfortably with limed oak, bronze and heavy linen; keep it away from a bathroom splash zone or a busy corridor. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

This is a job for a professional hanger used to natural-fibre papers. Takumi is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable; there is no repeat to match, but the hanger will want to balance the density of the fibres across drops. Divide the wall width by 0.91 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 5 drops, roughly 13 metres. The fibres vary in shade between batches, so order the whole room from one batch.
