Tali is the Indonesian word for rope, and the design is an embroidered study of twisted and braided fibre, the kind used to frame baskets and other woven goods. The stitching runs in two colours over a ground that looks and handles like silk: the polyester, viscose and linen base has a smooth, lustrous face, and the viscose embroidery adds a second, slightly different sheen on top. The repeat is small at 31 by 19 centimetres, so it reads as an all-over cord pattern rather than a single motif. It coordinates with the Racine wallpaper from the same house.
The base cloth is 50 per cent polyester, 35 per cent viscose and 15 per cent linen, embroidered in India, 133 centimetres wide and 430 grams per square metre, with a straight match. The four colourways are all two-tone: Cognac / Bleu Sarcelle, Kaki / Lie De Vin, Acajou / Orange Cannelle and Bleu Glacier / Jaune Beurre. The first two are the deeper, more autumnal pairings; Acajou / Orange Cannelle is warm and reddish; Bleu Glacier / Jaune Beurre is the one for a light room that wants a little cheer.
We use Tali for cushions on a plain sofa, for a pair of upholstered bedroom chairs that are more looked at than sat on, and for a Roman blind in a study where the small repeat suits the flat panel. On a large window it works better as a leading-edge border on a plain curtain. Pair it with a plain in one of its two colours. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow one extra 31 centimetre repeat per cut for matching, and for blinds ask your maker to plan the folds so the cord motif is not sliced at a fold line. Line it for blinds and curtains, and on seats ask for a cotton backing to protect the stitching from underneath.
