Casamance | Tannage

Tannage is a plain suede-effect wallcovering from Casamance's Odéon collection, and the ground the rest of that collection is built around. The surface is a short, dense polyester pile on a non-woven backing, with a soft nap and a matt finish that reads as leather-lined rather than upholstered. It deadens sound a little, and it gives walls a depth of colour that flat paint cannot manage, because the pile absorbs light rather than bouncing it back.

It is 100 per cent polyester, 350 grams per square metre, at a 140 centimetre usable width, which keeps joins to a minimum. Made in China, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of B s1 d0, Class A to ASTM E84 and a stated acoustic absorption of aw 0.15. There are 9 colourways: Taupe, Grenat, Ivoire, Kaki, Taupe Foncé, Ambre, Anthracite, Beige and Perle. Taupe, Beige and Perle are the ones we use most; Grenat and Anthracite suit a study or an evening room.

We tend to use Tannage on all four walls of a study, a dressing room or a snug, where the softness of the surface is the point, and as the plain partner to Odeon or Guimard on a feature wall. It pairs naturally with dark timber, leather and a wool curtain, and it is forgiving of uneven walls. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

We recommend a professional hanger for any textile wallcovering. Tannage is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable, and with no pattern the drops are cut straight to length; reverse alternate drops if your hanger advises, so the nap reads evenly. Divide the wall width by 1.4 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 3 drops, about 8 metres. Order the whole room from one batch so colour and pile stay consistent.
