Casamance | Teluk

Teluk is a jacquard velvet from the Benang collection, and it is built in an unusual way: the warp is striped in several colours and the weft is a bouclé yarn, so the viscose pile stands over a ground that already carries a pattern. The effect is a velvet with a faint, irregular stripe running through it, catching light differently as you move around it, and a softness of hand that comes from the viscose. It is a cloth that looks better the closer you get.

The composition is 54 per cent polyester and 46 per cent viscose, with the pile in viscose, woven in India. It is 140 centimetres wide, weighs 680 grams per square metre and is a free match with no repeat to allow for. Five colourways: Neige Poudré, a powdery off-white; Topaze, a warm golden tone; Kaki; Acajou, a deep mahogany red-brown; and Mordoré, a bronze that reads as metallic in low light. Kaki and Acajou are the ones we would put on a large piece; Topaze and Mordoré are good on a single chair or a run of cushions.

We use Teluk on an armchair or a small sofa in a sitting room, on a dressing-table stool, on a headboard, and on cushions where the striped ground shows as a detail against a plain. It brings the Indonesian palette of the collection into a scheme without any figurative pattern. Pair it with the Benang and Uluwatu embroideries or with a plain wool. As with any velvet, decide on the pile direction before cutting and keep it consistent across every panel, normally with the pile running down so it feels smooth when you brush it from top to bottom. Viscose pile will mark under pressure, so ask your upholsterer to avoid tight buttoning and to use a soft, even seat cushion. No repeat allowance is needed.
