Casamance | Tradition

Tradition is the most tapestry-like of the Les Tisserands weaves, a heavy jacquard in linen, wool and viscose with a cotton backing that gives it the firmness of a good upholstery cloth. A thick blended wool and linen yarn runs through the weft and structures the whole surface, so the pattern is felt as relief as much as seen as colour. The motif sits on a modest 21 by 24 centimetre repeat, which keeps it in scale on a chair.

The composition is 31 per cent Ecovero viscose, 27 per cent linen, 18 per cent cotton, 18 per cent wool, 3 per cent recycled cotton and 3 per cent polyamide, woven in Turkey. It is 144 centimetres wide, weighs 755 grams per square metre and has a straight match with a 21 centimetre vertical and 24 centimetre horizontal repeat. Five colourways, shared across the collection: Kaki, Ocre, Terracotta, Tabac and Pierre Bleue. Ocre and Terracotta are the warmest and the most obviously tapestry-like, Kaki and Tabac recede into a room, and Pierre Bleue is a slate blue that works with almost any wood.

We use Tradition on a single armchair that is meant to be noticed, on a window seat cushion, and on the outside back of a sofa that faces the door. It is also a good headboard cloth, where the relief catches side light. Against it we keep the rest plain: a smooth wool or a linen in one of the quieter tones from the weave. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a straight match, allow one extra 21 centimetre repeat per cut for seat and back panels so the motif can be centred and matched from inside back to seat. The cloth is thick, so ask your upholsterer to use a heavier thread and to reduce bulk at corners; on cushions, a piped edge in a plain contrast cloth is neater than self-piping.
