Casamance | Tramis

Tramis is the woven paper that gives this Casamance collection its name. Narrow strips of paper are woven in a close, regular grid in the manner of traditional Japanese paper weaving, then applied to a tone-on-tone or contrasting ground, so the weave reads as a soft texture or as a fine two-colour check depending on the colourway. The surface is dry and slightly crisp, and the regularity gives a wall order and calm.

It is 100 per cent paper on a non-woven backing, 250 grams per square metre, at a 91 centimetre usable width. Made in China, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of B s1 d0, Class A to ASTM E84 and a stated acoustic absorption of aw 0.15. There are 7 colourways: Sable, Noisette Carbonne, Perle, Noisette Foncé, Noisette, Beige Noir and Beige. Sable, Beige and Perle read as plain texture; Noisette Carbonne and Beige Noir run a dark ground behind a paler strip and read as a fine check.

We tend to use Tramis on all four walls of a study, a bedroom or a hallway, where paint would be too flat and a grasscloth too rustic. The tone-on-tone colourways suit pale timber and linen; the two-tone ones work with dark joinery and wool. It is also the plain we would put alongside the embroidered Silvara. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

We recommend a professional hanger for any paper weave. Tramis is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable with no pattern to match, but the weave should be kept level and the joins butted cleanly so the grid runs true. Divide the wall width by 0.91 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 5 drops, roughly 13 metres. Paper varies in shade between batches, so order the whole room from one batch.
