Uluwatu is an embroidery inspired by the peyote stitch of Indonesian beadwork, where each bead sits in a precise, regular grid. Casamance reproduces that regularity in thread: a fancy yarn twisted from glossy viscose, matt polyester and a strand of jute is laid onto a coloured linen and cotton ground, and a tone-on-tone embroidery finishes the surface. The jute gives it a dry, handmade feel; the viscose gives it a flicker of light. The repeat is 24 by 43 centimetres and the pattern reads as a fine, orderly texture rather than a motif.

The ground is 53 per cent cotton and 47 per cent linen, embroidered in India with jute, viscose and polyester. It is 132 centimetres wide, 385 grams per square metre and a straight match. Five colourways: Naturel, the quietest and the most tone-on-tone; Jaune Paille, a pale straw; Vert Sauge, a soft grey-green; Lie De Vin, a deep wine; and Orange Cannelle, a warm cinnamon. Naturel and Vert Sauge are the ones for a calm bedroom; the other three are better as a single accent piece.

We use Uluwatu on a headboard where the relief can be seen in raking light, on cushions across a plain linen sofa, and as a Roman blind on a smaller window where the regular pattern suits the flat panel. It will also make a curtain in a room that is not in heavy use. Pair it with a plain linen in the same tone as the ground so the embroidery is the only event. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one extra 24 centimetre repeat per cut length for matching, line anything that hangs so the embroidery is not seen in silhouette, and ask your maker to keep pins and the machine foot off the raised yarn. Jute is a hard fibre and will not take a tight fold well, so plan Roman blind folds to fall between the rows.
