Ovum by Christopher Guy brings a finely worked oval into the room. The pierced relief carving gives the frame an open, intricate character, while the mirrored centre provides a quieter surface within it. We would use that contrast deliberately: a detailed outline against a wall with very little else to interrupt it. The interest is in the relationship between the carving, the surrounding space and whatever the mirror is allowed to reflect.
The frame is carved from solid mahogany and offered in Renaissance Gold Leaf, Italian Silver or Cristo. There are 4 supplied sizes: 57 by 77 cm, 69 by 93 cm, 93 by 125 cm and 105 by 141 cm, given as width by height. We would choose the scale in relation to the furniture below, allowing the oval enough room to read clearly. Custom sizes and finishes are available on request.
Above a narrow hallway console, we would pair Ovum with a single ceramic vessel and a lamp with a restrained shade. In a bedroom, it could sit above a dressing chest, with linen and a plain upholstered chair keeping the composition soft. We would also consider it over a sitting room mantel, particularly where the surrounding joinery is simple. The carved frame can supply the decorative note without requiring the whole room to follow. We would leave the surrounding wall clear.
Before ordering, we would mark the chosen outline on the wall and check the reflection from the doorway and the nearest seat. A mirror often changes the view more than expected, so those sightlines deserve attention. We would ask the installer to confirm the wall construction and appropriate fixing arrangement, and request the relevant care guidance for the selected finish.
