Fish appear very early in Piero Fornasetti's work, on scarves, on trays, on porcelain, and they held his attention for the reason most of his subjects did: the outward form is simple and the thing itself is not. A fish is a plain shape concealing an entire order of life below the surface. Acquario takes that idea and puts it on a wall.
The composition is unusual. Fish are set at different scales and angles, drifting rather than swimming in any agreed direction, so the wall reads as a section cut through water rather than as a repeat. Each is drawn in the flat, precise Fornasetti manner, with scales and fins described as pattern, and the effect is closer to an engraved plate than to anything naturalistic.
The palettes stay within the atelier's usual classical range, which stops the design becoming a marine novelty and keeps it in the territory of the collector's cabinet. It suits an enclosed room where the conceit can be complete: a cloakroom, a bathroom, a small dining room, the inside of a study. Paired with dark timber and plain stone it is witty without being comic, which is the balance Fornasetti always struck. Used through a small room rather than on one wall, it becomes genuinely absorbing.
