An allium is already close to geometry before anyone draws it: a sphere of tiny florets held clear of the ground on a bare stem. Cole & Son took that structure at face value, and Allium is the result, a repeat of blooming globes carried on long leafless stalks, with the burst of the flower head rendered as texture rather than as individual petals. It is a floral built on the logic of a pattern rather than of a garden.

The stems give the design its vertical grain, and because there is no foliage between them the wall keeps a good deal of open ground. That openness is what makes the paper work at scale; the flower heads punctuate rather than crowd. A half-drop repeat sets each row of globes between those of the row before, so the eye reads a diagonal rather than a grid and the 76.2 cm repeat never announces itself.

Hung in a bedroom or a small sitting room it has the lift of a stripe without the formality of one. It also holds up well in a stairwell, where the stems do something useful with the height. The roll is 0.52 m wide, so allow carefully for drop length against a repeat of this size.
