Citrus runs right through the Fornasetti archive, and Arance traces a particular line through it: the 1950s tray Fette d'arancia, where sliced oranges were arranged as a graphic study, and then Barnaba Fornasetti's revival of the motif in the nineties as a printed cloth. The wallpaper follows that second, bolder reading, with whole fruits and cut sections drawn at close to life size and set in an unhurried repeat.
What distinguishes it from any other fruit pattern is the drawing. The oranges are observed rather than stylised: the pith is shown, the segments are counted, the leaf is turned. Fornasetti's method was always to take an ordinary object and repeat it until it became strange, and at wall scale that is exactly what happens. The fruit stops being decorative and becomes a subject.
A 64 cm straight repeat lines the fruit up across drops, which suits the graphic clarity of the design; a drop match would soften it unnecessarily. It is at its best in a kitchen, a garden room or a small dining room, and it takes well to painted joinery and unlined linen. On a 0.52 m roll it hangs conventionally, the repeat squaring up over two drops.
