Ardmore Cameos began as a set of plates, painted at the Ardmore studio as a wedding present for a friend of the house. Each plate carried a single animal portrait, and the wallpaper keeps that format exactly: a zebra, a leopard and their companions held one to a cartouche, each looking out with the particular expression the Ardmore painters give their subjects, wry, watchful, faintly amused.
Between the cartouches the ground is filled with softly drawn giraffe markings, which does two things. It gives the design a continuous texture so the portraits do not float, and it supplies a second, quieter pattern to carry the wall between them. The cameos are therefore incidents in a field rather than a repeat of motifs, which is why the paper reads as considered rather than as a menagerie.
A 0.69 m roll and 76.2 cm straight repeat give each portrait room, and drops align cleanly. It suits a hall, a child's room that will be grown into rather than out of, or a dining room where the animals become conversation across a table. Plain upholstery and honest timber suit it; anything patterned nearby will crowd it. It also works well above a dado, with plain paint carrying the lower wall.
