Blake is a damask in the classical sense: an ogee framework of scrolling foliage, mirrored about a vertical axis, repeated without variation up and across the wall. There is no attempt to modernise the form. Its interest lies instead in the printing, and specifically in what sits behind the pattern.
The ground is not plain. It carries its own subtle figure, so the damask is laid over a worked surface rather than a flat one, and the two layers catch light differently. Surface printing gives the ink a slight body where it sits on the paper, which means the motif stands very marginally proud of the ground; in raking light from a window or a lamp that relief becomes visible, and the damask acquires a texture close to figured cloth.
The repeat is 53 cm and the roll 0.53 m wide, so one full motif width falls per drop and the match is straight, about as straightforward as a damask gets to hang and forgiving around chimney breasts and door surrounds. It belongs in rooms with some formality already: a dining room, a hall, a landing, a first-floor bedroom. Against panelled joinery and plain curtains it does what a damask should, which is to give a room a background rather than a subject.
