Bluebell is arranged in the Art Nouveau manner, which is to say the plants are not scattered but composed: stems rising, curving and meeting to make a structure that would hold even if the flowers were removed. Wheat grasses arch over the top of each panel, poppies gather at the centre, and Hyacinthoides non-scripta, the English bluebell, hangs its bells along the vertical.

The whole design is built on tone and texture rather than on outline. Because the drawing works through fine hatched detail, the wall reads as a woven or embroidered surface from a distance and only resolves into individual species close up. That is precisely the effect the period aimed at, and it is what separates this from the flatter florals of the same subject.

It is a straight match with a 76.2 cm repeat on a 0.52 m roll, so the framed arrangement squares up across widths and the composition stays legible as a panel. Hung through a bedroom or a small sitting room it behaves like a printed cotton on the walls. It suits painted furniture, plain rush matting and unlined curtains, and it is better hung throughout a room than on a single wall, where the framing device tends to look truncated.
