Bougainvillea grows over half of Seville, across palace walls, along the avenues, spilling down chalky plaster where nothing else would hold. Cole & Son drew it in watercolour, and the medium suits the plant: the bracts are papery and slightly translucent in life, and washed colour catches that far better than flat print. The edges are soft, and the pigment pools where the petal folds back on itself.
An ombre runs through the flower clusters, each bloom shading from its centre outward, and that gradation is what gives the design movement. Nothing is outlined, so the pattern has no hard architecture; it drifts across the wall as the plant drifts across a facade. At a distance the effect is of colour massed in clouds rather than of a repeat.
It hangs on a third drop, meaning each length starts a third of the way down the pattern from the one beside it. The motif therefore steps diagonally across the wall and takes three widths to return to its starting point, which suppresses any vertical line and makes the massing look genuinely unplanned. Allow for it when ordering; a third-drop match produces more offcut than a straight one. Best in a bedroom, a garden room, or a stair where the climb suits it.
