Broderie Border came out of a pattern book in the Cole & Son archive, where borders of this kind were once supplied as a matter of course. Every paper had its trim, and no room was hung without one. It is a ribbon of embroidery-like ornament, drawn as a running stitch would run, with the small regular incident of needlework rather than of print.
At 4 cm high it is genuinely petite, and its usefulness lies exactly there. It will not decorate a room, but it will finish one: run along the top of a wall under a cornice, around a door architrave, or as the edge of a papered panel, it supplies the line that stops a wall simply ending. It is the kind of detail that reads as care rather than as decoration.
The repeat is 70 cm and the match is straight, and rolls run to 10.05 m. Measure the full perimeter before ordering, including returns into reveals, since horizontal work consumes length faster than expected. It sits particularly well over painted panelling and above a plain hung wall, and it is worth using in bedrooms, dressing rooms and passages where a small formality is welcome. It costs very little and finishes a room properly.
