Two Fornasetti preoccupations meet in Chiavi Segrete: dense, overlapping leaves, and the antique key. The keys are not displayed. They are set back among the foliage so that they surface only on a second or third reading, which is the whole conceit; the pattern rewards attention rather than announcing itself, and a wall of it holds interest far longer than its scale would suggest.
The leaves are drawn in the flat, graphic manner of the Fornasetti archive, layered rather than modelled, so depth comes from overlap and tonal shift rather than from shadow. The wide 0.69 m roll and the 57 cm straight repeat give the foliage room to build across a wall without the joins becoming legible. The palettes move through the seasons, from spring undergrowth to autumn and on into a wintry grey.
It is at its best in an enclosed room where the pattern can meet in the corners: a study, a library, a dining room, a small hotel bar. Paired with dark timber, brass and unlined linen it reads as considered rather than decorative, which is the distinction Fornasetti has always turned on. Rolls run to 10.05 m, and the straight match keeps waste modest for a design of this density.
