A toile de Jouy is a scene printed in one colour on a pale ground, a form invented in France in the seventeen-sixties to put narrative onto cloth cheaply. Chinese Toile applies the convention to chinoiserie subjects: pastoral vignettes of Far Eastern life, figures at leisure, small landscapes, each self-contained and scattered across the ground.

This is an early Cole & Son design and it has been redrawn rather than simply reprinted, which shows in the linework, cleaner than the originals, with the etched detail holding up at a scale a modern room can take. The single-colour printing is what makes a busy design manageable: from a few feet away the vignettes merge into an even tone, and only close to does each scene become legible.

That behaviour is why toiles work in small rooms as well as large ones. Hung throughout a cloakroom, a back stair, a small bedroom or a bathroom, the design supplies incident without weight. It has always been paired with painted timber and simple checked or plain cloth, and there is no good reason to depart from that; the pattern needs quiet around it to be read at all. Small rooms take it better than large ones, which is not true of most pictorial papers.
