Clandon is an ogee, the pointed-arch form, repeated and interlocked, that runs through Islamic tilework into European silk weaving and from there into printed paper. It is one of the oldest structures in decoration and one of the most useful, because it fills a surface completely while leaving the eye a clear path through it.
Here the ogee is drawn at medium scale and produced by surface printing, the old roller method that lays a slightly raised film of ink onto the paper. The result has a softness that flatbed printing never achieves: edges are marginally imprecise, the ink has body, and the pattern sits on the surface rather than in it. It is the reason archive papers printed this way still look different from modern reproductions of the same designs.
The repeat is only 14 cm, so the design behaves almost as a texture from any distance, and pattern matching across the 0.53 m roll is quick with little waste. That short repeat makes it a good choice for rooms full of awkward returns: a passage, a landing, a small bedroom, the inside of a cupboard-lined dressing room. It sits quietly behind pictures and furniture, which is the job it was drawn to do.
