Concrete does what its name says: it reproduces the surface of poured and shuttered concrete, with the mottling, the tonal drift and the small imperfections a cast surface acquires as it cures. It is a considered piece of drawing rather than a photographic reproduction, and the difference matters, because the variation is designed to sit at the right scale for a wall rather than for a slab.
What it offers is a plain with substance. Flat paint gives a room an even surface and nothing else; this gives depth and a slight coldness, the quality raw material has and finishes do not. Against timber, brass, linen and old rugs it supplies the hard note that keeps a soft scheme from becoming bland, and it makes a good ground for pictures, which read particularly well against it.
It hangs on a half drop with a 53 cm repeat on a 0.53 m roll, so the mottling staggers across widths and never repeats at the same height, essential in a design imitating a cast surface where any visible repeat would give the game away. Use it in a kitchen, a hall, a study or a bathroom, or as the plain wall in a room that has its pattern elsewhere.
