Crackle reproduces what happens to paint over time. When a film of paint dries or ages faster than the surface beneath it, it splits into a network of fine fissures, craquelure, the thing that gives an old panel painting its character and a piece of eighteenth-century furniture much of its value. The design takes that network as its entire subject.

There is no pattern in the ordinary sense: no motif, no structure, nothing that repeats to the eye. The wall simply carries an all-over web of fine cracking, which behaves as a texture rather than as a design and reads at any distance as a worked surface. Some colourways take the bleached, chalky look of paint that has weathered outdoors; others take the gilded route, where the crackle sits over metal and the fissures catch light.

It hangs on a half drop, which is what keeps the fissures from repeating recognisably across adjacent widths. Because it is effectively plain, it will go anywhere a plain paper would go, and it earns its place in rooms where flat paint would look too new: a hall, a dining room, a study, a bathroom. It is the right background for gilt frames, old timber and worn stone.
