Craquelure is a failure that decoration has learned to want. When a paint or glaze film ages faster than what lies beneath it, it splits into a fine network of fissures, the thing that gives an old panel painting its authority and a piece of lacquered furniture much of its value. Crackle Curio takes that network as its whole subject.
There is no motif to find and nothing that repeats to the eye. The wall carries an even, all-over web of fine cracking, so it behaves as a texture: at a distance a plain, close to a worked and weathered surface with real depth. Some colourways sit in the bleached, chalky register of paint left in the weather; others put the fissures over metal, where the cracks pick up light and the surface reads as gilding that has aged.
The repeat is 53 cm on a 0.53 m roll with a half-drop match, which staggers the fissures across widths so no section of cracking appears twice at the same height. Because it is effectively a plain, it goes wherever a plain would go, and it is particularly good in rooms hung with pictures, where new flat paint always looks too new.
