Dialytra comes out of the early Victorian archive, from the decade when British pattern drawing was moving away from the heavy Regency scroll towards something lighter and more botanical. The design is a leaf trail: a stem that curves, throws off a leaf, and curves back, over and over, with no flower and no incident to interrupt it.

Its interest is in the line. The leaf is drawn in outline with almost no modelling, so the pattern sits on the surface of the paper rather than pretending to depth, and reads as a finely printed textile would. At 35 cm the repeat is short, which means the trail establishes itself quickly and then simply continues. On a 0.53 m roll with a straight match the drops line up level and the design behaves almost as a texture across a large wall.

That restraint is what makes it usable. It will paper a whole room without closing it in, and it takes furniture and pictures well, which is why it tends to end up in bedrooms, in dressing rooms, and on the walls of stairs and landings where a bolder archive print would become tiring on the second pass. It is an unfussy paper, and it repays being given good curtains and left alone.
