Goldstone rethinks Pebble, an earlier Cole & Son texture, and pushes it further towards mineral. The surface is covered in small marbled flecks, irregular in size and unevenly distributed, drawn as though a stone had been cut and polished and the crystalline inclusions left showing on the face. Nothing in it repeats, which is the reason it never resolves into a pattern however long you look at it.
It is designed to be read at two distances, and the two readings are quite different. Close to, the flecks are distinct, individual marks with visible edges sitting on a matt ground. Step back and they merge into a low continuous sheen with no discernible pattern at all, and the wall behaves as a plain with movement in it. That is a difficult thing to achieve on paper, and it is the reason textures of this kind earn their place.
As a plain it will do things paint cannot. Use it to give depth to a room where the architecture is doing the work, a panelled dining room, a hall, a lobby, the wall behind a bank of joinery, or as the calm ground beneath a heavily patterned fabric scheme. Under lamplight it comes into its own; in flat daylight it settles down and behaves.
