Cole & Son | Grande Fleur (2 roll set)

Grande Fleur is the wildflower ground from Idyll released as a design of its own. It is a millefleur: flowering plants covering the whole surface with no horizon, no centre and no perspective, a convention borrowed from medieval tapestry and used here at a generous, contemporary scale.

Each petal was hand-rendered before the artwork was assembled, and the hand is what keeps the density readable. Nothing is drawn twice the same way. Stems lean at different angles, heads turn, and the tonal range within a single flower is wide enough that the mass never flattens into a texture. It is supplied as a two-roll set, so quantities should be calculated in pairs rather than by the single roll. The scale is contemporary rather than antique, so the flowers read as individual plants and not as a diaper of small sprigs.

A pattern this full needs the room to be otherwise quiet. It is at home in a bedroom, a garden room, a small drawing room or a stairwell where it can be seen from more than one level. Plain floors, unpatterned fabrics and painted joinery will keep it from becoming overwhelming; against those it reads as a wall of flowers rather than as a busy paper.
