Hummingbirds Flora is a panel rather than a repeating paper. It is a study of the birds in flight, moving between honeysuckle flowers, hovering, feeding, occasionally settled on a branch, with butterflies drawn among them and the planting rising the full height of the scene. Nothing about it is arranged as a repeat, and the composition reads from the bottom of the wall upward.
Because it is composed as a panel and supplied at 2.1 m, the design has a top and a bottom and a proper sense of growth. The flora is densest at the foot and thins as it climbs, and the birds are distributed where the composition needs them rather than where a repeat would place them. It can be used in isolation, as a single cascading scene on one wall or in a recess, or hung side by side and repeated to make a continuous botanical interior.
Used singly it behaves like a piece of art and should be treated as one, centred, well lit, with nothing hung against it. Used in repeat it becomes an interior in its own right, which suits a dining room, a hall or a bedroom where the paper is meant to be the whole scheme.
