Kalahari comes from a tortoise. An earlier Ardmore print of the shell was found to resolve into a stylised star, and that single form has been developed into a burst repeat: a geometric built out of something organic, which is why it never feels mechanical.

The composition works like a score. Large shapes fall at intervals and carry the weight; smaller silhouettes run between them and set the tempo. Because the scale shifts, the pattern plays with focus, and it can be read two ways at once, as the labyrinth of markings across a single shell or as a whole cluster of tortoises seen from above, gathered at the edge of water. Neither reading settles, which is the interest of it.

Technically it is a hybrid. The etched drawing gives a soft watercolour bleed within each shape while a stencil-like outline holds the edge crisp, so the design has both warmth and definition. That combination lets it work in rooms where a purely graphic geometric would feel cold. An enclosed room takes it best: a study, a small dining room, a cloakroom where the pattern can meet in the corners. It also sits well beneath a picture rail, where the smaller silhouettes settle and the larger shapes hold the lower wall.
