Lee Priory belongs to the earliest years of Victoria's reign, when the Gothic Revival had moved out of the antiquarian's hands and into ordinary decoration. Its motif is small and repetitive, built from the pointed arch and the quatrefoil, and it has the graphic bluntness of that moment rather than the fussiness that came later.

It is a single-colour surface print, and that is the whole of its character. One colour laid on a ground means no modelling and no shading: the pattern exists as line alone, and the paper beneath does the rest. Surface printing gives that line a soft, slightly raised edge and a chalky body, so the design looks stamped rather than reproduced, and it holds up at very close range.

Because the scale is small, the design reads almost as a texture from a few feet away, which makes it far easier to place than a gothic pattern has any right to be. It works in a corridor or a small back room, behind bookshelves, in a cloakroom, or as a quiet ground in a room where the furniture and the pictures are doing the talking. It also carries well up a stair, where the small scale keeps its footing on a wall that is rarely square.
