Cole & Son | Lilac Grandiflora (2 roll set)

Grandiflora is the same lilac taken up to a scale at which it stops being a wallpaper pattern and becomes an image. Where the standard design repeats the shrub across a wall, this one enlarges a section of it across a two-roll set, so a single group of trusses can run most of the height of a room.

Enlargement is unforgiving, and the drawing survives it because the density is real. Each cone of blossom is still built from individual florets, and at this size that construction becomes visible: the eye can follow the way a truss is made, floret over floret, and the mass reads as botany rather than as texture. The foliage behind it is drawn with the same care, so the flowers have something to sit against.

Because it comes as a two-roll set, it wants a wall of its own. Behind a bed, across the end of a room, in a stairwell where it can be seen from a distance and then approached, it does what a large piece of art would do. It asks for very little around it: plain fabric, plain floor, and nothing else hung on the wall. The standard repeating version of the design is available where a whole room is wanted instead.
