A damask is a formal thing: bilateral symmetry, a repeating ogee, scrolls and flowers arranged with the discipline of woven silk. Lola observes all of that, and then hides a flamenco dancer inside it. She is drawn into the scrollwork, arms raised and skirt turning, and she is not obvious. Most people see the damask first and find her afterwards.

That concealment is what makes the design worth living with. A conventional damask gives everything up at once and is thereafter merely handsome; this one keeps something back, and a wall of it goes on rewarding attention long after the pattern has become familiar. Once found, the figure cannot be unseen, and the whole repeat reorganises around her.

The reference is Andalusian and specific: Seville, where the dance is less a performance than a local grammar. In a room the design behaves as any good damask does, giving structure and a degree of formality, but with wit underneath it. It works in a dining room, a small drawing room, or a hall where people have time to look at the walls while they wait. Panelling below and plain upholstery around it will let it read as architecture rather than as decoration, which is how a damask is best used.
