Ludlow comes from cloth rather than from paper. The design was taken from an eighteenth-century fabric made for the Williamsburg Colony, and the origin still shows in the way it moves: the stems have the continuous, unbroken flow of something drawn for a textile, where the pattern had to work as it fell rather than as it lay flat.
The drawing is fine and open. Foliage trails in long curves with flowers set at intervals along them, and there is enough space between the trails for the ground to remain part of the design. Nothing is heavy, nothing is dense, and the whole has the slightly formal grace of the mid-eighteenth century, before pattern became either grand or literal.
That lightness makes it easy to use. It sits well in rooms with panelling and good joinery, where a stronger design would fight the woodwork, and equally well in a plain room that wants a period reference without a period scheme. Bedrooms, dressing rooms and small sitting rooms take it particularly well, and it hangs comfortably alongside painted furniture and old textiles. Its open drawing is also forgiving around awkward corners and shallow reveals, where a denser pattern would show every interruption.
