Luna is a single form repeated: a large disc, etched rather than drawn, its surface worked with fine lines so that it reads as a moon and not simply as a circle. The design comes out of the Cole & Son archive, and the adaptation has kept the boldness of the original rather than softening it for contemporary taste.
Everything depends on the spacing. The discs are set at generous intervals in an even repeat, so there is a great deal of open ground between them, and the pattern reads as a series of deliberate placements rather than as a field. That is a graphic decision more than a decorative one, and it gives the design an unusual stillness for something at this scale.
The etched surface is what saves it from flatness. Close to, each disc has texture and a slight variation of tone; from across a room they resolve into simple shapes. It suits rooms with plain architecture and little on the walls, where pattern is wanted but not a busy one, and it is among the few large-scale designs that will still work in a small room with a low ceiling. Several colourways carry a metallic disc, which alters through the day and gives the design a second life after dark.
