The paisley reached Britain from Kashmir by way of shawls, and by the time the Scottish town gave it its English name the motif had already been abstracted almost past recognition. Malabar carries that abstraction further. The boteh is still legible, but the swirling forms around it have loosened into something closer to 1960s psychedelia than to Mughal ornament.

What holds it together is line. The whole design is drawn as continuous curved outlines rather than as filled shapes, so the eye follows the movement instead of reading the motif, and the pattern appears to turn on the wall. Scale contributes: at this size a paisley stops being a small repeating device and becomes a series of large forms with real presence.

The 72 cm repeat is long and the half drop shifts the motifs between drops, which prevents any vertical alignment and keeps the swirl continuous across a wide wall. On a 0.52 m roll it hangs conventionally. It is bold at close range and considerably calmer once it covers a whole room, which is how to use it: four walls rather than one, and very little else competing. Several colourways carry a metallic ground, which gives the line a further lift as light moves across the wall.
