Malachite is a copper carbonate that grows in concentric bands, and when a mass of it is cut across those bands the result is the tight, rippling, eye-like figure that has made it a collector's stone since antiquity. Piero Fornasetti returned to it repeatedly, along with fossils and other sectioned minerals, because it does something no drawn ornament can: it repeats without ever exactly repeating.

The design follows the stone closely. Bands crowd against one another, contract into tight eyes and open out into broad sweeps, and the rhythm changes constantly across the surface. That irregularity is what makes it hypnotic; the eye keeps looking for the system and never quite finds it. Nothing here is stylised. This is observation rather than invention, which is unusual within the Fornasetti canon and part of why it sits so well beside the more figurative designs.

On a wall it behaves as a material rather than as a pattern. At almost any distance it reads as a slab of worked stone, giving a room the weight and richness of a mineral surface, and it is at its best in a small enclosed space, a cloakroom, a dressing room, the back of a bar, where the whole wall can be taken in at once.
