The mark this stripe reproduces belongs to pottery rather than to paint. A potter loading a brush and drawing it down the side of a vessel leaves a line that starts loaded and ends dry, that pools where the hand slows and skips where the surface is uneven, and Marquee Stripe is a study of that behaviour rather than of a stripe.

The consequence is that no two bands are quite alike. Edges are soft and slightly ragged, the density of colour shifts along each run, and there is a faint suggestion of the brush's separate hairs within the mark. From a distance the wall reads as a calm, regular stripe; close to, it reads as something made by hand and left as it fell.

It hangs random match, which is a real practical advantage. Nothing needs aligning across a seam, so drops can be cut to suit the wall rather than the pattern, offcuts remain useful, and out-of-true walls, awkward returns and shallow reveals cause no trouble. That makes it particularly good in older houses and on stairs, where a matched pattern is a constant negotiation. It is equally good used only on the lower wall beneath a dado, where the brushwork can be seen at close range.
