Nuvole al Tramonto takes the Fornasetti cloud etching and lets colour do what line cannot: it graduates. Where the original study holds a fixed sky, this version moves through a continuous ombre from one end of the panel to the other, so the wall carries the passage of a sky changing rather than a sky held still. The etched clouds remain exactly as drawn, hatched and precise, unromantic in technique if not in effect.
It is supplied as a panel rather than as a repeating paper. Each roll contains four drops which together make a single scene 274 cm wide and 300 cm high, and the panel can be trimmed from the top or the bottom depending on which part of the gradation you want at eye level. That is a decision worth making on site, with the light in the room. Panels can be run side by side where a whole wall or a ceiling is to be covered.
Two colourways are offered, Dawn and Dusk, each holding a different hour. The design belongs in rooms where one surface can be given over to it entirely: above a bed, over a bath, across a ceiling in a small sitting room. It asks for very little around it.
