Cole & Son | Nuvole Sample

This is a sample of Nuvole, the largest of the Fornasetti sky designs, sent so the drawing can be seen at its true size and in the light of the room it is intended for. Nuvole is a mural rather than a repeating paper: an etched skyscape built from fine hatched line and composed to be read as one continuous scene across an expansive wall.

Seeing it in the hand matters more here than with a conventional paper. A mural has no repeat to judge, so what a sample shows instead is the weight of the line, the density of the hatching and the way the ground behaves under changing light. Hold it against the wall at different hours before committing. The etching reads quite differently in morning light and under lamps, and on a surface this large that difference decides the room.

Nuvole is printed to order rather than held in stock, with a lead time stated at three to four weeks, so the sample is also the practical first step in a longer conversation about a wall. Where a mural would be too much, the smaller-scale Nuvolette covers the same subject as an ordinary repeating paper. On a wall of this size, a decision made from a screen is no decision at all.
