The Palm Jungle print reaches its smallest form here, on a cushion made from the same heavy velvet used for upholstery. At 50 cm square the fronds are seen close to full drawing scale, so the layering that makes the pattern work stays legible rather than cropped. It is one of the reasons a large cushion suits a large print better than a small one does.
Black fringing runs the edge, and it does two things: it finishes the cushion as a proper piece of soft furnishing rather than a scatter, and it gives a hard silhouette to a soft object, so the cushion holds its shape on a deep sofa. The inner is feather and down, which collapses and recovers properly and stops it sitting up the way a foam pad does.
It is made by hand in Britain. On a plain sofa it does the work of a print without committing the room to one; on a bed or a window seat, in a pair, it reads as deliberate. The same design exists as wallpaper and by the metre in velvet and linen union, should the cushion turn out to be the beginning of something. A cushion of this size wants a sofa with some depth to it.
