This is the Palm Jungle velvet cushion in its plainer form, finished with a piped edge cut from the velvet itself rather than with fringing. The piping is contrasting, so the outline of the cushion stays crisp, but the effect is architectural rather than decorative: a drawn line around a dense pattern.
At 50 cm square the frond drawing is seen close to full scale, which matters with a print built on layering. Cropped smaller, the overlapping leaves lose the depth that makes them work. The cover is made from the heavy velvet specified for upholstery, so it wears as a cushion in daily use should, and the inner is feather and down, which gives the collapse that a good cushion needs.
It is made by hand in Britain. Because the finish is restrained, this is the easier of the two to place: on a leather chair, a plain sofa, a window seat, or in a pair on a bed where fringing might be too much. The design runs through the Cole & Son range as wallpaper, linen union and velvet by the metre, so a room can take as much or as little of it as it wants. A pair reads better than one.
