Palm Leaves is a single frond, drawn boldly and repeated, and it depends entirely on the confidence of that drawing. There is no scene and no depth, only the leaf in silhouette with its ribs indicated, laid across the wall at an even interval in a way that belongs unmistakably to mid-century decorating.
The graphic quality is the whole point. Because the motif is stated flatly and the ground left plain, the pattern holds its clarity at any distance and a wall of it reads as a designed surface rather than as foliage. The chalky matte grounds keep it from looking slick, which is what separates it from the later imitations of the same idea.
This is a pattern for rooms that want lifting rather than furnishing: a bathroom, a garden room, a bedroom in a house near water, a small hall. Because the repeat is so legible it is happiest on walls that can be seen more or less whole, and it works better with simple furniture than with period pieces. Its colourways run from very quiet neutral pairings to sharper, higher-contrast ones, which moves it between background and foreground. It appears in both the Icons and the Contemporary Selection collections, which is a fair measure of how long it has been wanted.
