Cole & Son | Pavilion

Pavilion is a garden with a whole ecosystem inside it, and it is designed to be read slowly. Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing, is the idea behind the collection it belongs to, and the design does something close to that on a wall: the longer you stand in front of it, the more of it appears.

Other designs from the same collection are hidden within this one. The water lilies of Lily Lotus float somewhere in it, the ornamental kaki persimmon appears among the planting, and the Buddha figure from Tile Toile is there, seated, for anyone who finds him. The palette is autumnal and drawn from Japanese colour rather than from European garden painting, which gives the whole thing a warmth that reads as light rather than as pigment.

It is supplied as a panel, 210 cm wide by 3.5 m high, rather than as a repeating paper, and it is printed on a non-woven ground, which is hung by pasting the wall and comes away cleanly in one piece. A panel of this scale wants a wall to itself: behind a bed, at the end of a corridor, above a bath, or as the single decorated surface in a room that is otherwise plain.
