Pebble is a speckle: the fine irregular spotting found on a bird's egg, enlarged only slightly and repeated at 13 cm so that no unit of the pattern is ever legible on its own. There is nothing to read and nothing to align. The eye takes in a surface rather than a design.
What it most resembles in the hand is shagreen, with the same dense granulation, the same chalky matte finish and the same way of gathering light unevenly across a plane. Used across a whole room it does what a good plain cannot, which is to give a wall a grain. Corners and returns disappear, and the imperfections of old plaster stop announcing themselves.
This is a background paper in the proper sense, made to sit behind pictures, furniture, curtains and joinery without asking anything back. Its range of chalky, muted colourings is wide, which makes it useful for tying a scheme together across several rooms. With a short 13 cm repeat, a straight match and 10.05 m rolls at 0.52 m wide, it is among the more economical papers to hang and the least demanding to calculate. It belongs to the Landscape Plains collection, where it does the quiet work that every scheme needs somewhere.
