Petite Fleur is a millefleurs, a meadow of wildflowers packed edge to edge with no ground visible between them, and it comes from Idyll, a larger garden design in which the same flowering ground surrounds a fountain. Lifted out on its own and reduced in scale, it stops being a scene and becomes a surface.
Every petal was drawn by hand, and the looseness of that drawing is what stops the pattern resolving into a grid. Nothing lines up; flowers of different kinds sit at different angles, and the eye is given no unit to hold on to. From a distance the wall reads as a fine even texture, and only close to does it break into individual blooms. Some colourways are printed tone on tone on a lustred mica ground that shifts as the light moves across it; others are wholly matte and read flatter.
A pattern with no direction and no obvious repeat is unusually easy to place. It papers a small bedroom, a bathroom or a dressing room without shrinking it, and it will sit behind pictures and furniture without argument. The design is also made as a fabric in satin and in linen union, and there is a larger-scale version for rooms that want the flowers read individually.
