Petite Tile is the smaller of two versions of the same idea, reduced until the individual tile stops being legible as a tile. What remains is an interlocking geometry of the kind that covers the courtyard walls of Morocco, a pattern built to be seen in quantity, where the repeat is the point and no single unit is meant to hold attention.
At a 17.5 cm repeat the design behaves almost as a texture. The eye reads an even, faintly faceted surface rather than a row of shapes, and the wall keeps its flatness, which is exactly what the larger Tile does not do. Printed in two closely related tones it is very quiet; in its darker and metallic colourways the facets pick up light and the geometry comes forward.
A small, regular pattern like this is the most useful thing in a decorator's cupboard. It lines a cloakroom, a back stair or a run of cupboard doors without competing, and it sits happily behind pictures. At 0.53 m wide on a 10.05 m roll with a straight match and a short repeat, it is economical to hang and forgiving around awkward returns. It also coordinates with the larger Tile, should a scheme want both scales at once.
