Protea Panthera is the strangest of the Ardmore designs and the most deliberately composed. A central vine runs the height of the drop, and along it move big cats, not stalking or fighting but stepping, in the flattened processional way that animals are painted onto pots. The protea, South Africa's national flower, opens at intervals along the same vine, and from one of the blooms a pair of eyes looks back out.

That single detail sets the register for everything else. Flowers, leaves and insects are worked over in fine embellishment, all of it drawn from Ardmore's ceramic vocabulary, and the whole sits between decoration and hallucination without ever tipping into either. The scale is grand: a 100 cm repeat on a wide 0.7 m roll, hung as a half drop so the vines interlace across the joins rather than marching in parallel.

A design at this scale needs a wall it can complete. Given a dining room, a stair or a double-height hall it becomes architecture; squeezed into a small room it loses the vertical run that makes it work. Rolls are 8 m rather than the usual 10, which is worth noting when quantities are set against a tall drop.
