Rose is an ogee trail, which means the structure is doing as much work as the flowers. Roses in bud and full bloom sit within a lattice of curving stems, with fern fronds filling between them, so there is a clear architecture beneath what first looks like an English garden left to itself.

The drawing is dense and finely detailed, and the fern is the reason it holds together: the fine cut leaf breaks up the mass of the flowers and gives the eye somewhere to rest. Several colourways place the trail on a dark ground, where the blooms read almost graphically, which moves the design well away from cottage territory. It is a heritage motif handled without nostalgia. Both the rose and the fern are drawn from observation rather than from pattern convention, which is why the trail reads as a growing plant rather than as a decorative device.

With a 64 cm repeat on a half-drop match, the ogee shifts across each drop and the trail climbs the wall diagonally rather than in columns. The 0.52 m roll suits rooms with frequent interruptions: chimney breasts, alcoves, a stair with returns. In a bedroom or a small sitting room the pattern can meet the corners and close the space deliberately.
