Roseberry is a chinoiserie trail and carries the conventions of that tradition faithfully: slender boughs climbing the wall, blossom at full stretch, small fruits weighting the branches. The drawing has the sweetness of high summer without the density that usually comes with it. There is air between the stems, and the ground stays visible throughout. Chinoiserie has a long history of being overdone, and the discipline here is in what has been left out: no figures, no pavilions, no bridges, only the plant.
The trail is the reason it behaves so well over height. The composition rises rather than repeating sideways, so the eye is led up the wall and rooms of modest ceiling height gain from it. It is printed on a non-woven ground, a substrate that is dimensionally stable and hangs flat. It is also a substrate that comes away cleanly later, which matters where a scheme is likely to change.
Colourways run from powdery and soft to fully saturated, and one carries a shimmer that catches light across the blossom, so the same drawing can be made quiet or emphatic depending on the choice. Small enclosed rooms take it best, seen at close quarters: a powder room, a dressing room, a dining room lit by candles, where a climbing trail can wrap the walls without needing a long view.
