Cole & Son | Royal Giraffe Gilded

The scene at the centre of Royal Giraffe is a small one: a young giraffe turning back into its mother's shoulder, and the whole paper is arranged to protect it. Acacia leaves and bean pods fill the space around the pair without crowding them, so the drawing keeps a stillness that designs at this scale rarely hold. Giraffes are awkward subjects for a repeating pattern, being tall and narrow and difficult to tile; the acacia canopy solves it, closing the space above the animals and giving the repeat somewhere to turn.

Each animal is worked by hand, markings drawn rather than stamped, and on the gilded ground the scene takes the warmth of late afternoon light. The base carries a fine texture that catches a raking beam and lifts the detail without turning the whole wall reflective. Read from across a room it is figurative and calm; read from a foot away it becomes a piece of drawing.

The hundred-centimetre repeat is deep, and the half-drop match staggers each drop against its neighbour so the giraffes never form a rank across the wall. At 0.69 m the roll is wider than most, which means fewer seams on a long run. It wants a room with plain joinery and little competition: a stairwell, a dressing room, a child's room meant to last well past childhood.
