Savanna Shell is drawn from the leopard tortoise, whose shell carries markings close to a leopard's rosettes, arranged in the pyramid-shaped scutes that fit together across its dome. Enlarged and flattened onto a wall those scutes become a small-scale interlocking geometric, the animal reference present but not obvious. It shows the Ardmore method applied to a texture rather than a scene: the source observed closely, then abstracted almost past recognition.

The design is semi-plain in effect, which is its purpose. Each scute is drawn with the tonal graduation of refracted light, as though seen through water or under moving leaf shadow, so the wall has depth and movement without a legible motif. Several colourways introduce a burnished metallic pass, and on those the graduation becomes considerably more active as light crosses it.

With a 52 cm repeat matching the roll width on a straight match, setting out is straightforward and waste is low. It does what a good textural paper should: fills a wall convincingly, takes pictures and joinery in front of it, and gives a scheme something to sit against. Use it in a dining room, a dressing room, or any room whose real interest lies in its furniture. It is equally useful as a companion to the more figurative papers in the same range.
