The thistle entered Vivienne Westwood's work as an acknowledgement of the house's long affinity with Scotland, and Soft Thistle is an abstracted version of the milk thistle: the plant reduced to its angular silhouette, then enlarged well past life size. It appeared in the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood Spring-Summer 2023 collection before becoming a wallpaper.
Translating it to a wall required softening. Cole & Son's designers combined the motif with a hand-painted cross-hatch that runs beneath and through it, a texture drawn from the distressed fabric treatments the house has always favoured. The effect is that a very graphic shape sits on a surface that looks worked and slightly worn, which stops the scale from turning aggressive. It is a good example of a fashion motif genuinely redrawn for the wall rather than simply enlarged and reprinted.
At a 91.4 cm repeat on a straight match the thistles align vertically, and the pattern needs height to be understood: a full wall rather than a panel between openings. The 8 m roll is shorter than the house standard, so quantities should be calculated on the repeat rather than assumed. In a dressing room, a stairwell or a bedroom with tall walls it holds its own without help. Against plain upholstery and hard flooring it needs no second pattern anywhere in the room.
